Good Intent Card Deck

For my BFA Thesis Capstone, I answered the question "How might I enable young adults to identify their superpowers?". This research led to the intentionally designed card deck, Good Intent, which guides users through action and play to answer life's biggest questions.

Role: Experience Designer + Researcher

Problem Space

For young adults ages 18-34

  • 16% that graduate from college, have become dissatisfied with their job.

  • And of those workers that are employed, 21% do not feel confident in finding another job if they quit their current one (PEW Research Center)

The Research

My idea was that if I could create a tool for young adults to use to unlock self-awareness, it could help to navigate job dissatisfaction and other life crisis. Recognizing who you are and what you want to do is an important part of living out your intentions. You can use what makes you unique to carry out your life goals.

RESEARCH QUESTION:

How might I enable young adults to identify and use their superpowers?

HYPOTHESIS:

The design of a question card deck will enable young adults to identify their superpowers so they can be successful and live intentional lives.d I received insight that I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. Specifically, having the questions in the ‘take action’ category become more concrete.

Visualizing the Research

I love to grab whiteboard markers and go at it. There is something about doodling that allows me to enter a state of flow. When trying to figure out complex problems, this is a low risk way to ideate and get started.

Defining the Card Deck

There needed to be different kinds of cards to make this deck useful and effective for young adults. I defined three categories that could work with each other or be used on their own.

User Testing

Testing the cards with potential users was a priority. I asked young adults, professionals, mentors, peers, and professors of all ages and backgrounds. Also, asking people unfamiliar with my project proved valuable, and I received insight that I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. Specifically, having the questions in the ‘take action’ category become more concrete.

Final Solution

Good Intent was designed to alleviate anxieties around life's challenges, but it’s also a great addition to any self-care routine!

This deck can help you overcome stress, whether it’s quitting your job, graduating from college, or some other quarter-life crisis.
